MARY MARY EXIBHITION : An outdoor sculpture exhibition in London

TheCOLAB and the Artist’s Garden present Mary Mary, an outdoor public sculpture exhibition showcasing the work of nine female artists. This exhibition takes place in central London, on the expansive rooftop terrace of the Artist’s Garden, above Temple Underground Station.

Tribute to female artists

The exhibition features commissioned works by Rong Bao, Candida Powell-Williams, and Alice Wilson, as well as adapted works by Lucy Gregory and LR Vandy. Existing works by Olivia Bax, Frances Richardson, Holly Stevenson, and Virginia Overton complete this collection. Mary Mary positively reframes the characterization of strong women as “contrary,” exploring and subverting the architectural and historical aspects of the garden to propose a new sculptural language for public space.

Reclaiming urban space

The artists of Mary Mary reinvest urban space, both physically and conceptually, in a domain historically dominated by men. The Artist’s Garden, designed by theCOLAB, is the world’s first sculpture garden dedicated exclusively to the works of female artists. This project is supported by Westminster City Council.

Featured works and artists

Rong Bao presents Yellow Path (2024), a sculpture inspired by tactile paving for the visually impaired, critiquing urban planners and inviting tactile and vocal interaction.

Olivia Bax offers Cartouche (2023), a humorous piece using the shipping crate as both sculpture and container.

Lucy Gregory showcases It’s All Kicking Off (2024), a kinetic sculptural collage inviting the viewer to become both driver and performer.

Virginia Overton with Untitled (chime for Caro) (2022), an interactive kinetic sculpture using steel offcuts from Anthony Caro.

Candida Powell-Williams presents Auguries through the Mist (2024), a newly commissioned unruly fountain inspired by classical garden architecture.

Frances Richardson transforms a neglected bench into a sculptural pause with Performed Indolentia.

Holly Stevenson pays tribute to Maria Koch with Another Mother (2022), a sculpture celebrating the supportive roles of women.

LR Vandy exhibits Superhero Cog-Woman (2019-2024), a sculpture of gears painted in festive colors, honoring the invisible work of women.

Alice Wilson presents Savoy (2024), a vertical forest of colorful construction wood.

A new sculptural language

Mary Mary offers a large-scale reclamation of space by female artists, providing a new perspective on gardens and nursery rhymes, two elements deeply rooted in British national consciousness. This exhibition celebrates the diversity and creativity of female artists and invites the public to rediscover urban space through their works.
