Greece upsets England at Wembley : A shocking defeat for England in the UEFA Nations League
A tactical plan gone wrong
Interim England manager Lee Carsley’s bold offensive strategy backfired during the UEFA Nations League match against Greece. Despite a late goal by Jude Bellingham in the 87th minute, England suffered a surprising defeat at home, at Wembley.
A promising start for Greece
Greece took the lead through Vangelis Pavlidis, who scored calmly four minutes into the second half. This goal exposed the weaknesses in England’s defense and set the tone for the rest of the match. Pavlidis struck again in injury time, sealing a well-deserved victory for the visitors.

Controversial tactical choices
With captain Harry Kane injured, Lee Carsley opted for a formation without a recognized striker, placing Jude Bellingham in a false nine role. Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon, Bukayo Saka, and Cole Palmer were positioned in support, but this setup proved ineffective and disjointed.
England’s defense struggles
England’s defense was severely tested by a well-organized Greek team. The Greeks found the back of the net five times, although three of these goals were disallowed for offside. The Greek celebrations included a tribute to George Baldock, their former teammate who recently passed away.

Late changes prove insufficient
In response to his initial plan failing, Lee Carsley brought on strikers Ollie Watkins and Dominic Solanke, the latter earning his second full cap seven years after his first. Despite these changes, England could not turn the tide.
A dramatic end to the match
England attempted to stage a comeback after Bellingham’s goal, but the Greeks continued to pose a threat and ultimately punished England once more in the final minutes. This defeat ends Carsley’s winning streak since taking over from Gareth Southgate.
