Chelsea thrashes Southampton to clim to second place in the Premier League

Chelsea continued their impressive run with a commanding 5-1 victory over Southampton on Wednesday night in the Premier League. This win, their fourth consecutive across all competitions, propels Enzo Maresca’s men to second place in the standings, ahead of Arsenal on goal difference.

Early lead

It took only seven minutes for the Londoners to take the lead. A perfectly executed corner by Enzo Fernandez found Axel Disasi, who headed home with authority. However, the joy was short-lived. Just four minutes later, Kyle Walker-Peters capitalized on a marking error by Fernandez to set up Joe Aribo for the equalizer.

Dominance and costly mistakes

Despite enjoying favorable possession and applying constant pressure on Chelsea’s defense, Southampton made costly errors. A weak pass from goalkeeper Joe Lumley allowed Noni Madueke to intercept and assist Christopher Nkunku, restoring Chelsea’s lead. Shortly after, Madueke scored a well-deserved goal, and Jack Stephens was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair, reducing Southampton to ten men.

Controlled second half

With a numerical advantage, Chelsea dominated the second half. It wasn’t until the 76th minute that Cole Palmer scored the fourth goal, following a brilliant team move capped by a shot from Nkunku. Substitute Jadon Sancho sealed the 5-1 scoreline with a late goal from a Malo Gusto assist.
