EFL Cup: Newcastle dethrones Arsenal and qualifies for the final

Newcastle United secured their place in the EFL Cup final by beating Arsenal 2-0 in the second leg at St James’ Park on february 5, 2025.

Explosive start for Newcastle

Right from kickoff, Newcastle United displayed their intentions by pressing high on Arsenal’s defense. In the 4th minute, Alexander Isak, well-served by Anthony Gordon, found the back of the net, but his goal was disallowed for offside. Shortly after, Jacob Murphy took advantage of a rebound from Isak’s shot and opened the scoring in the 19th minute.

Gunners under pressure

The second half saw Arsenal continue their defensive mistakes. In the 52nd minute, William Saliba lost the ball to Anthony Gordon, who narrowly missed doubling the lead from the center circle. Three minutes later, a poor clearance from David Raya was intercepted by Fabian Schär. He found Anthony Gordon, who scored the Magpies’ second goal.

Heading to the final

Newcastle will face the winner of the semi-final between Liverpool and Tottenham. In the first leg, Tottenham won 1-0 at home, but the return match at Anfield promises to be competitive.
